Praising God for His Faithfulness

Praising God with the harp for His faithfulness

Psalms 71:22

So I will praise You with the harp for Your faithfulness, O my God; I will sing praise to You with the lyre, O Holy One of Israel.

Historical Context

David, the king of Israel, is believed to have written Psalm 71 during a time of great persecution and struggle. He was likely advanced in age, and was facing numerous challenges and threats from his enemies. As a leader in ancient Israel, David was well aware of the importance of faith and trust in God. He had been taught by God from his youth, and had experienced many troubles and misfortunes throughout his life.

Despite these challenges, David had always turned to God for help and guidance, and had consistently seen God's faithfulness and deliverance in his life. This experience is reflected in Psalm 71, where David expresses his trust and hope in God, despite the presence of enemies and persecution. The Israelites were a people who placed a strong emphasis on faith in the God of Israel, and who saw music and worship as essential components of their relationship with Him.

David's psalms, including Psalm 71, are characterized by their beautiful and expressive language, and their emphasis on the importance of worship and praise. David's life was a testament to the power of faith and trust in God, and his psalms continue to inspire and encourage us today.

Expository Teaching

David writes in Psalm 71:22, So I will praise You with the harp for Your faithfulness, O my God; I will sing praise to You with the lyre, O Holy One of Israel. This verse is a beautiful declaration of trust and hope in God, despite the presence of enemies and persecution. David's use of the harp and lyre as instruments of praise emphasizes the joy and beauty of worshiping God. He pours out his heart in praise to God, who has been faithful to him throughout his life.

David had lived long enough to experience his share of turmoil and struggle. His enemies were seeking to harm him, and he was crying out to God for help. Yet, even in the midst of difficulty, David praises God for His faithfulness. This powerful testimony to David's trust in God serves as an example to us of how we can worship God even in the darkest of times.

The phrase O Holy One of Israel is a title that emphasizes God's uniqueness and separateness from all other gods. David recognizes that God is the one true God, and that He is worthy of praise and worship. This title also serves as a reminder of God's covenant with Israel, and David's place within that covenant. By using this title, David expresses his gratitude and admiration for God's faithfulness to him and to his people.
