The United States has acknowledged the existence of secret space weapons for the first time. U.S. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink made the announcement at the Air, Space, and Cyber Conference, stating that the Space Force now has on-orbit space control weapons capable of defending against hostile adversary action.
The announcement comes after a report linked Chinese satellite imagery to Iranian strikes on U.S. service members in Jordan. Meink refused to provide details about the weapon's capabilities or its developer.
Prior actions by President Donald Trump and Congress provide insight into the possible nature of the system. In 2019, Trump created the Space Force as the sixth branch of the military. He also signed executive orders aimed at developing defense systems against ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missiles, as well as protecting American interests in space.
Congress has warned about the growing threat of counterspace weapons from adversaries like China and has put forward plans to build space cooperation with allies like Poland. However, it is unclear whether U.S. allies contributed to the development of the weapon system referenced by Meink.
