US House Speaker Mike Johnson claims opposition to data centers is a Chinese psychological operation, stating it's a mind game played by Democrats and China to manipulate Americans.

What happened

House Speaker Mike Johnson has expressed his opinion that opposition to data centers in the US is being fueled by a Chinese psychological operation. He believes that Democrats and China are working together to manipulate public opinion on the issue. Johnson made these comments in a video posted online, where he also stated that concerns about data centers are overstated and that they are essential for the US to remain a leader in the artificial intelligence sector.

Data centers have become a controversial topic, with some arguing that they drive up utility costs and drain resources from local communities, while others believe that these negative effects are exaggerated. The debate has led to calls for regulation, particularly with the midterm elections approaching. Johnson, however, is against hyper-regulation, saying that it would cause the US to lose its competitive edge to China.

Johnson's views are shared by President Donald Trump, who has expressed support for the expansion of AI, including data centers. Trump believes that data centers can bring economic benefits, including lower taxes and job creation, and that opposing them would be detrimental to the country's prosperity.

An investigation by the X Safety team found evidence of suspected Chinese inauthentic accounts involved in influence operations, aiming to manipulate the debate about American AI and energy policy. These accounts were posting claims that AI data centers are driving up household electricity prices and straining the grid, as well as AI-generated cartoons depicting data-center operators enriching themselves at the public's expense.
