What happened
The United States has deployed additional troops and military equipment to the Middle East. An aircraft carrier, the USS Theodore Roosevelt, and approximately 10,000 troops are en route to the Persian Gulf, where they will join existing forces. Two carriers and 50,000 servicemembers are already stationed in the region.
In addition to the troop deployment, the US has also moved Patriot missile batteries to Saudi Arabia and Qatar. These batteries are intended to protect energy infrastructure in the event of renewed conflict with Iran.
Recent public statements from President Donald Trump suggest that he anticipates a return to combat with Iran soon. However, diplomatic efforts have not been entirely abandoned, with Iran offering to allow inspectors into the country's nuclear sites in exchange for sanctions relief.
The increased military presence in the region has contributed to rising oil prices, with Brent crude opening at $102 per barrel and national averages for regular gas and diesel reaching $4.40 and $6.37 per gallon, respectively.
