What happened
American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten is fighting against the Department of Transportation's efforts to identify illegal aliens holding commercial driver's licenses. The department recently closed over 100 commercial trucking schools due to a lack of English proficiency among graduates, a violation of federal law.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy accused Weingarten and the AFT of protecting illegal aliens with commercial driver's licenses, some of whom may be driving school buses. Weingarten's union joined a lawsuit against the Transportation Department, seeking to stop the agency from accessing the personal records of 17 million commercial driver's license holders.
The AFT claims it is protecting the privacy of its members, including school bus drivers and Department of Transportation employees who require a commercial driver's license. However, critics argue that the union is actually trying to protect the number of drivers who have obtained licenses illegally or without proper English proficiency.
