A UK-Iranian dual national has been arrested in connection with a foiled attack on the RAF Fairford airbase in southwest England.
What happened
Last weekend, an incident occurred at the RAF Fairford airbase, which is used by US air forces during military operations against Iran. Five suspects were detained after their vans, suspected of carrying chemicals and explosives, were reported traveling toward the airbase. The suspects were later released on bail.
Aerial footage showed an explosive ordnance disposal robot operating near the suspected vans. British officials have now announced the arrest of a 27-year-old UK-Iranian dual national on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts. A second man, a 26-year-old UK national, has been questioned under caution, and two properties have been searched.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham suggested that foreign-state involvement may be at play, stating that there are strong indications Iran was involved in the incident. British authorities are working closely with their US counterparts to investigate the matter.
