The UK suspects Iran was involved in a suspected terrorist plot at an airbase in England used by the US Air Force. Five British citizens were arrested near the base and faced explosives and terror charges. The men were released on bail but are still under investigation.
A police investigation is ongoing, with Gloucestershire police and British counter-terrorism detectives working with US colleagues. The incident occurred at RAF Fairford, which has been used by the US Air Force for decades and was the site of protests by anti-war activists in the past.
A tip from a female farmer led to the arrest of the five men, who were seen heading towards the airbase in three vans. The vans were searched, and while no bombs were found, flammable materials, including petrol, were recovered. Iran has denied any involvement in the incident, with the Iranian Embassy in the UK releasing a statement rejecting the reports.
The UK Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, stated that there are strong indications that Iran played a part in the incident. The US President and Secretary of State have also suggested a possible connection to Iran. The incident is being taken seriously, with the UK authorities continuing to investigate and the Iranian Embassy reserving the right to take legal measures in response to the allegations.
