A former Hamas operative, known as Mr X, was granted British citizenship despite his ties to the terrorist organization. Mr X, who served as a bodyguard to former Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, was given refugee status in 2015 and later obtained full citizenship.
Intelligence officials say Mr X was a high-level asset for Hamas's military wing and used his British passport to travel between Hamas hubs in Qatar, Turkey, and Egypt. He allegedly helped coordinate a plot to attack European Jews and Israeli diplomats, amassing an arsenal of weapons and tactical gear.
The plot was foiled in November when a joint operation by Mossad, German, and British intelligence arrested seven suspects, including Mr X. He is currently behind bars in the UK, facing extradition to Germany.
British authorities are facing questions over how Mr X was able to obtain citizenship and operate under their noses. A 100-year anonymity order was initially placed on Mr X, but it was later reduced after journalists challenged the ruling.
