What happened
British authorities have arrested five men near a military base in southwestern England on suspicion of preparing a terrorist attack. The base, RAF Fairford, is a forward operating location for the US Air Force Global Strike Command and has recently been used to launch bombers targeting Iran.
Police were alerted to three suspicious vehicles apparently bound for the base and detained the five men in the nearby village of Whelford. The men were initially arrested on suspicion of explosives offenses and later rearrested on suspicion of preparing an act of terrorism.
About 85 households were evacuated as a precaution, and a 400-meter cordon was established around the vehicles while Army bomb disposal specialists examined them. The US European Command is working closely with British authorities to monitor the situation and ensure the safety of US personnel and the local community.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are looking into possible links to the Iranian regime. In August, Iran threatened to attack US air bases in Europe if the US escalated the war.
