What happened
A super PAC supporting President Donald Trump has launched an ad campaign targeting Texas Senate candidate James Talarico. The ad describes Talarico as very weird due to his past comments on Christianity and gender, including claims that Jesus was a radical feminist and that there are more than two biological sexes.
Talarico had previously stated that there are six biological sexes, and that Jesus Christ and God have non-traditional gender identities. The ad criticizes these views, calling Talarico a liberal weirdo who is too loco for Texas.
The Trump-aligned super PAC, MAGA Inc., has committed at least $15 million to support Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is running against Talarico. Recent polls suggest a tight race in Texas, a state where Democrats have not won a statewide election in decades.
The weird line of attack is not new, as Democrats used it against Trump and Vice President JD Vance during the 2024 presidential election. Despite this, Trump and Vance won the popular vote, the first Republican ticket to do so since 2004.
