Trump Administration Launches Initiative to Combat Invasive Mosquito and Tick Populations
The Blaze

The Trump administration has launched an initiative to reduce invasive mosquito and tick populations in the nation's capital by 90% and 50% respectively within two years.

What happened

The Trump administration has launched an initiative to combat invasive mosquito and tick populations in the nation's capital. An executive order aims to reduce the invasive mosquito population by 90% and the tick population by 50% within two years. The order directs various federal agencies to work together to implement the anti-pest campaign, which includes draining breeding grounds on federal land and controlling deer and rodent populations that carry ticks.

The initiative also explores the use of sterilization techniques, genetic modification, and beneficial bacteria to combat the pests. A similar approach has been successful in Singapore, where the release of lab-bred male mosquitoes carrying the Wolbachia bacteria led to a significant decline in mosquito populations and dengue fever exposure.

Private companies in the D.C. area have already begun releasing Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes, and the federal government has released funds for a pilot program to study the efficacy of an anti-tick pesticide. The program will lace deer and rodent bait with the pesticide to reduce tick populations and prevent tick-borne diseases.
