What happened
A Ukrainian couple, Vadym Oleynik and Olena Kravchenko, sparked international outrage after filming themselves riding a nesting sea turtle on a beach in Ras al Hadd, Oman. The couple, who were accompanied by environmental volunteers, took turns sitting on the turtle while it was laying eggs. They also posted photos and videos of their actions on social media, including one clip showing Oleynik holding a newly hatched turtle while balancing on the back of the adult turtle.
The incident has been widely condemned, with many calling for the couple to be punished for their actions. The Italian conservation project Biologicamente criticized the environmental organization that was monitoring the site, saying that a serious and professional organization would never allow such behavior. Oman's Environmental Authority also stated that the couple's actions violated wildlife protection laws and that they had taken legal action against them.
Oleynik, a fitness influencer, has since apologized for his behavior, claiming that he was misled by the organization and did not intend to harm the turtle. However, his apology has not been accepted by many, who are calling for him and his partner to face consequences for their actions.
