What happened
A possible terror attack against American forces in the UK was thwarted after a local farmer reported suspicious activity near Royal Air Force Fairford, a US Air Force-operated military installation in Gloucestershire, England.
The farmer spotted three abandoned white vans blocking a country road and saw a group of men, described as Middle Eastern-looking, running off through the trees, some wearing masks or balaclavas. The farmer alerted the police, and armed officers quickly responded, capturing five alleged would-be bombers.
The suspects were arrested on suspicion of committing offenses under the UK's Explosives Act and preparation of a terrorist act. The UK's Counter Terrorism Policing is investigating the incident, and a 400m cordon has been put in place around the vehicles while the Army's Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit conducts examinations.
US European Command stated that it remains vigilant and will take appropriate actions to ensure the safety and security of US service members, civilians, contractors, and their families across the European theater. The US Embassy in London issued an alert encouraging American citizens to exercise caution and be mindful of personal security.
President Donald Trump praised the arrest, saying it was a fantastic job and that the suspects had been under investigation. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham tweeted that the incident was deeply concerning and urged the public to avoid speculating about it.
