Bangkok has declared a flood emergency disaster after heavy rains submerged roads and filled canals. Residents have been advised to stay at home and move belongings to upper floors.

What happened

Bangkok, the Thai capital, has been hit by severe flooding after more than 300mm of rain fell since Thursday. The flooding has submerged roads and prompted the declaration of a flood emergency disaster across the city.

The heavy rains have subsided, but canal water levels remain high, and the city's governor has warned that the flooding is not yet over. Residents have been advised to stay at home, and those living near canals have been told to move their belongings to upper floors.

The flooding has caused traffic chaos on the city's already congested roads. A 67-year-old resident, Somkid Pheuk-ngam, described the situation as worse than in 2011, when Bangkok was impacted by nationwide flooding that lasted for three months and killed hundreds across Thailand.

The Thai Meteorological Service has forecast more heavy rain through the week, although the area of low pressure causing the downpours is expected to move towards central Thailand. All 50 of Bangkok's districts have been declared emergency zones, with the east of the city being the hardest hit.

So far, no casualties have been reported in Bangkok from this latest flooding. The city's authorities are working to pump out the water and mitigate the risk to residents, particularly those living near canals.
