Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that Russia will use all available weapons to defend its territory if it is attacked. This statement was made at a foreign policy forum, where Putin accused the West and Europe of escalating tensions by discussing potential war preparations and conducting military drills in the Baltic Sea.
Putin's remarks follow a warning from Moscow to NATO that it would not hesitate to use nuclear weapons to defend the Kaliningrad region if it is cut off from the rest of Russia. The Russian Embassy in Ireland stated that Russia would be ready to use its entire arsenal, including nuclear weapons, to defend its territory if NATO attempts to isolate the Kaliningrad region.
NATO has pushed back against Russia's nuclear rhetoric, with spokesperson Allison Hart denouncing the threat of force and emphasizing that NATO is a defensive alliance that does not pose a risk to Russia. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte also urged Russia to stop its aggression against Ukraine and cease its nuclear threats.
The situation remains tense, with Western military officers believing that key military installations in Kaliningrad would be a likely target if Russia were to attack a NATO ally. NATO allies have conducted military exercises in the Baltic Sea region and have planned additional exercises for October.
