Poland Seeks Permanent US Military Base Amid Tensions with Russia
Washington Examiner

Poland's president seeks a permanent US military base, dubbed 'Fort Trump', to deter Russia, while the government, led by Donald Tusk, is more cautious about the alliance with Washington.

What happened

Poland's president, Karol Nawrocki, is seeking to establish a permanent U.S. military base in the country, which he would like to be named Fort Trump. This move is intended to deter Russia and strengthen Poland's alliance with the United States. However, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has expressed caution, prioritizing solidarity with European countries, particularly Germany, over the proposed base.

The idea of a U.S. military base in Poland is not new, with previous plans for a missile defense site having been scrapped by the Obama administration in 2009. Despite this, the U.S. has maintained a military presence in Poland, with around 10,000 troops currently stationed in the country.

Nawrocki's push for a permanent base has been supported by the U.S., with President Donald Trump announcing plans to send an additional 5,000 troops to Poland. The estimated cost of infrastructure for the base could be between $2.9 billion and $4.4 billion.

Tusk's government has been more reserved in its support for the base, with Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski suggesting that proposing the name Fort Trump would be a display of servility. Instead, he suggested alternative names such as Pulaski, Kosciuszko, or Reagan.

The debate over the U.S. military base in Poland highlights the country's complex relationships with its European neighbors and the United States. While some Poles see the base as a guarantee of security, others are more cautious, prioritizing European solidarity over a closer alliance with the U.S.
