Ontario Premier Doug Ford has announced that his province will help fund the construction of the proposed Northern Shield pipeline. The pipeline, which would stretch 3,300 kilometers, aims to transport oil from Western Canada to refineries in southern Ontario.
The project, dubbed the Northern Shield Energy Corridor, would carry roughly 500,000 barrels of oil per day and could expand to 800,000 barrels per day. Ford made the announcement alongside Alberta Premier Danielle Smith during an energy summit in Calgary, stating that the project would create thousands of jobs and help protect Canada's energy and economic sovereignty.
Smith expressed confidence that various energy infrastructure projects, including the West Coast oil pipeline, would come to fruition. She emphasized the importance of building the pipeline to offset challenges posed by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and to demonstrate Canada's reliability as an energy supplier.
Ford emphasized the need for regulatory certainty and streamlined approvals to attract investors to major projects. He also highlighted the potential for simultaneous construction of multiple pipelines, citing the example of the nation-spanning rail line built in the 1880s.
