What happened
A powerful nor'easter is bringing dangerous conditions to the US Northeast, with over 70,000 customers without electricity. The National Weather Service warned of gale winds and heavy rain that could cause roads to flood and trees to be downed. In New Jersey, roads are flooding and some homes are inundated with water.
In the coastal New Jersey borough of Surf City, water flooded the streets, and some homes were affected. The owner of Surf City Marina, Kenny Formica, reported that water was rising inside his marina, a rare occurrence that last happened during Hurricane Sandy. Formica's business suffered over $4 million in damage from the hurricane.
Ahead of the storm, workers at the marina secured dock lines, moved loose items and equipment, and parked trucks and forklifts at the highest point of the property. However, by Saturday morning, even these were nearly surrounded by water. Formica received messages from customers reporting missing boats and Jet Skis, including a 25-foot boat that had blown off its lift.
Cancellations are widespread in the Northeast, with concerts, flights, and baseball games affected. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul urged people to use caution, warning of coastal flooding, heavy rains, powerful winds, and waves as high as 20 feet. The mayor of Sea Bright, New Jersey, Brian Kelly, said the borough is bracing for winds up to 50 mph and flooding that could reach up to 6 feet on some streets.
