NATO's top military commander, Gen. Alexus G. Grynkewich, has expressed concerns that hostile states, including China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea, are increasingly cooperating with each other. This cooperation is seen as a threat to global security interests.
Grynkewich warned that the broad global security environment is complex and likely to become even more so in the coming years. He highlighted the risk of simultaneous conflicts in multiple parts of the world, citing the return of large-scale conflict in Ukraine and the Middle East as examples.
The NATO commander also warned of growing hybrid attacks and threats to critical infrastructure. He pointed to recent incidents, such as a attempted drone attack against a German airport and a Russian warship firing flares at a Danish military helicopter, as examples of state-directed sabotage becoming more brazen.
Grynkewich recommended that allies reinforce their support for Ukraine in response to hybrid attacks, saying that this would show Russia that its strategy is not working. His remarks came as EU defense ministers met to discuss collective responses to Russian hybrid warfare.
