The US administration's promise of mass deportation is being undermined by a lack of worksite enforcement, with concessions to donors and weak penalties for employers hindering removal efforts.

The administration's promise of mass deportation is being undermined by a lack of worksite enforcement and concessions to special interest groups.

What happened

Despite campaign promises of mass deportation, the current administration's policies are falling short of this goal. According to government numbers, deportation efforts are not meeting expectations. A former deputy field office director for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations attributes this to a lack of worksite enforcement and weak penalties for employers who hire undocumented immigrants.

The deportation process is complex, involving multiple steps including locating and arresting individuals, detaining them, obtaining a final order of removal, and coordinating flights. However, the process is often slowed down by foreign governments that fail to confirm identities or issue travel documents, leading to delays and releases back into the community.

Critics argue that the administration's policies are being influenced by special interest groups, including agriculture, hospitality, construction, and meatpacking industries, which have lobbied for exemptions and slower worksite enforcement. These carve-outs are defended as practical but amount to a policy of enforcing the law against individuals while protecting employers who hire them.

A recent poll found that 80% of registered voters support deporting immigrants who are in the country illegally and have committed crimes. To keep the promise of mass deportation, the administration would need to implement policies such as mandatory E-Verify for employers, increased funding for detention capacity and fugitive operations, and worksite enforcement without industry carve-outs.
