What happened
Rapper Macklemore was dropped from Ed Sheeran's tour after making pro-Palestinian remarks during his performances at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium. Macklemore had been scheduled to open eight of the remaining 10 U.S. dates on Sheeran's Loop Tour.
Macklemore used his stage time to deliver a series of political messages, including "Free Palestine" and calling for a "free" Lebanon, Cuba, Congo, and Sudan. He also praised the "bravery" of Columbia University students who participated in pro-Palestinian encampments.
The decision to drop Macklemore from the tour came after New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft got involved, making it clear that the rapper would not be permitted to perform at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Other stadium owners also refused to host the concerts with Macklemore on the bill.
Macklemore published a lengthy statement in response to being dropped from the tour, revealing details of his private conversations with Sheeran and suggesting that Sheeran's refusal to turn his concerts into political rallies was a moral failing. Sheeran later issued a response, confirming that venues threatened to cancel upcoming shows if Macklemore remained on the tour and disputing the suggestion that he personally fired Macklemore.
The incident has sparked a wider debate about the role of politics in music and the responsibility of artists to speak out on social issues. Macklemore has faced accusations of anti-Semitism in the past and has been criticized for his recent remarks, which some have seen as inflammatory and divisive.
