Iran War: Foreign Minister to Visit China Amid Ongoing Conflict
The American Conservative

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will visit China amid the ongoing conflict, as the Pentagon's inspector general reports strategic inventory shortfalls in materiel due to the war.

What happened

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is set to visit China, according to a statement from the ministerial spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei. This development comes after China's President Xi Jinping offered to play a diplomatic role in resolving the Iran War. Meanwhile, the Pentagon's inspector general has released its first report on the war, highlighting strategic inventory shortfalls in materiel and industrial base bottlenecks for munitions resupply.

The report covers the period from April 1 to June 30 and notes the difficulties of finding adequate naval basing in the Persian Gulf region and the challenges of using Diego Garcia for logistics support. Additionally, the UK government is considering intervening to help Saudi Arabia against Yemen's Houthis, who have made significant territorial gains on the Red Sea coast, threatening the Middle East's second main sea lane.

The conflict has also led to increased pressures on energy markets, with Brent crude opening at $106 per barrel and a national average price of $4.33 per gallon of regular gas and $6.27 per gallon of diesel in the US. Iran's National Security Council secretary, Mohsen Rezaei, has dismissed the possibility of imminent negotiations, stating that no talks will occur until Iran's conditions are met.
