What happened

An Indian pilot, Capt Smit Machchhar, was stabbed by another pilot on a Flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv, but managed to prevent a crash, saving hundreds of lives. The flight was diverted to Saudi Arabia, where Machchhar was taken to a hospital and is recovering well.

The incident occurred on Flydubai's flight FZ1073, which took off from Dubai International Airport and was carrying at least 150 people, mostly Israeli passengers. The plane made a rapid descent over Saudi Arabia and signalled an emergency code before landing safely at Tabuk Airport.

According to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the attacker apparently tried to crash the plane, but was overpowered by a passenger and a crew member. Machchhar, who has been hailed as a "true hero", has more than 9,750 hours of flying experience and has been praised for his bravery and presence of mind.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump have also praised Machchhar's courage, with Modi saying that his valour helped save hundreds of lives and avert a great tragedy. The Indian embassy in the United Arab Emirates has said that Machchhar is in good health and recovering well.

Machchhar's former employer, SpiceJet, has issued a statement calling him a "hero" who saved "countless lives". His friends and colleagues have also described him as a disciplined and experienced pilot who remained calm in a crisis.
