What happened
The Democratic Republic of Congo has recorded over 8,000 cases of Ebola since the outbreak was identified in May, with nearly half of them being fatal. The World Health Organization confirmed the outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which is less common than other strains. The epicenter of the outbreak remains Ituri province, but cases are rising rapidly in neighboring North Kivu.
Attempts to contain the disease have been complicated by mass displacement and violence in the region. Health workers have faced attacks and mistrust from locals, with some believing that Ebola is not real. A senior political party member was beaten to death after encouraging people to take precautions against the disease.
The safety of health workers is a concern, with many working with insufficient protective equipment. A frontline doctor died after exposure to Ebola patients, prompting calls for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Despite reports of a decline in cases in Ituri, other provinces are still seeing significant increases. The Public Health Ministry has reported an overall favorable development in containing the disease, but other reports indicate that the situation remains dire.
