Dutch police arrested a 24-year-old suspected member of the ShinyHunters cyber-crime group, which claimed to have hacked the FBI, before the alleged attack took place.

What happened

Dutch authorities have apprehended a 24-year-old suspect from Amsterdam, believed to be a member of the ShinyHunters cyber-crime group. The group had claimed responsibility for hacking into the FBI's systems, allegedly stealing sensitive information on approximately 38,000 bureau staff members.

The suspect was arrested on September 15, prior to the alleged FBI hack, and is also being investigated for attempted incitement to commit two murders. During the arrest, police seized the suspect's devices and found a significant amount of information, including details about the planned murders.

The ShinyHunters group has been linked to several high-profile breaches, including hacks on Rockstar Games and the education platform Canvas. The group claimed to have exploited a vulnerability in the Oracle cloud storage system used by the FBI to breach multiple systems, including those containing agent medical records and investigation information.

The FBI has confirmed that it is working with Dutch partners to investigate the hack and has urged members of the ShinyHunters group to surrender. The arrest has been seen as a significant development in the ongoing investigation, with the FBI director thanking Dutch authorities for their cooperation.
