China Urges US Cooperation on Artificial Intelligence

China Urges US Cooperation on Artificial Intelligence
Washington Examiner

China urges the US to cooperate on artificial intelligence, warning against creating an 'iron curtain' around AI, and suggests it can be a 'new frontier' for cooperation rather than conflict.

What happened

China has urged the United States to cooperate on artificial intelligence, warning against creating an 'iron curtain' around the technology. Chinese Ambassador to the U.S. Xie Feng stated that Beijing believes the relationship between the two countries should be a collaborative effort, rather than a competitive one. Feng's comments came after Chinese President Xi Jinping's three-day visit to the U.S., during which the two sides held their first AI dialogue.

The ambassador noted that the two countries agreed to establish a bilateral communication channel for AI incidents and will hold further discussions on AI in November. Feng emphasized the importance of cooperation, saying that AI can be a 'new frontier' for China-U.S. cooperation, rather than a source of conflict. He also suggested that the U.S. should consider embracing open AI models, citing the example of a Chinese open model being used to stop a rogue AI attack.

Feng's comments may not alleviate concerns among some lawmakers, such as Sen. Ted Cruz, who have raised suspicions about China's intentions in the AI race. Despite this, the ambassador expressed optimism about the potential for cooperation between the two countries, citing a reversal of negative American attitudes toward China since 2023.
