California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed an executive order that requires state agencies to use the term 'Artificial Intelligence' when referring to the technology.
What happened
This move comes after President Donald Trump ordered the federal government to start using the term 'Super Intelligence' instead. Newsom's order directs all California agencies to use 'Artificial Intelligence', 'AI', or 'Artificial Intelligence (AI)' in official communications, regardless of the terminology used by the federal government.
Newsom announced the order on social media, saying 'I just signed an executive order permanently declaring Artificial Intelligence 'Artificial Intelligence' in California. You're welcome, America.' His office also criticized Trump's administration, stating that 'Super intelligence is clearly not coming from the White House — that's why California continues to lead.'
The order is part of a series of new California AI regulations that cover employment, workplace surveillance, deepfakes, and other uses of the technology. Newsom emphasized that 'AI should expand opportunity — not come at the expense of workers and families,' and that California is 'putting people at the center, ensuring we all have a voice in the decisions shaping their future.'
