California Pushes Back Against Trump's 'Super Intelligence' Rebrand

Gavin Newsom challenges Trump on AI
Breitbart News

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order directing state agencies to use the term 'artificial intelligence' instead of 'super intelligence', in response to President Trump's push to rebrand the technology.

What happened

California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed an executive order directing state agencies to use the term 'artificial intelligence' instead of 'superintelligence'. This move is seen as a response to President Trump's effort to rebrand the technology as 'superintelligence'.

President Trump had announced that the federal government would adopt the term 'Super Intelligence', arguing that the technology is not artificial. He had also gathered support from top tech executives, including Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who signed a 'White House Accord on Super Intelligence'.

In response, Governor Newsom's order requires California agencies to refer to the technology only as 'artificial intelligence' or 'AI'. Newsom described the order as 'informed by common sense' and took a shot at the president's rebranding effort, saying 'Super intelligence is clearly not coming from the White House — that's why California continues to lead'.

Additionally, Newsom signed bills aimed at protecting workers from AI-driven decisions, including requirements for layoff notices tied to AI and limits on how companies can use AI in disciplinary actions and firings.
