Bipartisan Efforts to Cut Gas Taxes Gain Momentum

Bipartisan Efforts to Cut Gas Taxes Gain Momentum
Washington Examiner

Bipartisan efforts to cut gas taxes are gaining momentum as Republicans and Democrats seek to address rising fuel costs ahead of the November elections, with several states proposing gas tax cuts or suspensions.

What happened

Texas has become the latest state to address rising fuel prices due to the Iran war, with Governor Greg Abbott issuing a 30-day disaster declaration to cut costs at the pump. This move comes as both Republican and Democratic candidates in various states are proposing measures to suspend or eliminate the federal gas tax. In Wisconsin, both gubernatorial candidates have called for the repeal of the state's minimum markup law, which prohibits gas stations from selling fuel below cost. Similarly, in Georgia, the governor has suspended the state gas tax for 30 days, while in Ohio, a proposal to cut the state's gas tax has been unveiled.

In several states, including Michigan and Alaska, Senate candidates are also emphasizing the need to address rising energy costs, with some proposing a temporary embargo on diesel exports. The Iran war has become a key issue in many of these campaigns, with candidates from both parties trying to gain an edge on the topic. Many of these proposals aim to provide relief to families and businesses struggling with high fuel prices, which have been exacerbated by the conflict.
