Senator Bernie Sanders is investing millions of dollars from his campaign funds to support socialist state Representative Angie Nixon in her bid for a U.S. Senate seat in Florida. Nixon is challenging Senator Ashley Moody for the position. Sanders' investment comes after Nixon expressed concerns that the Democratic establishment has not provided sufficient financial support for her campaign.
Nixon had requested support from the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, but was met with a non-committal response. However, she has received support from other senators, including Sanders, Angela Alsobrooks, Lisa Rochester, and Kirsten Gillibrand. Sanders has stated that Democrats need to defend progressive candidates and is planning to hire additional political organizers and organize texting campaigns to support Nixon's campaign.
