The Reserve Bank of Australia has increased interest rates to 4.6 percent, a 15-year high. The decision was made unanimously, with the board citing ongoing inflation, the Middle East conflict, and the impact of artificial intelligence on technology prices as key factors.
The interest rate hike of 25 basis points is intended to address elevated inflation, which remains a concern. The board noted that global energy prices have risen due to the Middle East conflict, and artificial intelligence is driving up demand for technology-related goods, putting pressure on domestic capacity.
Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers acknowledged that the rate increase would make things harder for Australians, who are already under pressure. He attributed the decision to the Middle East war, stating that Australians are paying a high price for the conflict.
Others, including TV anchor David Koch and Liberal Shadow Treasurer Tim Wilson, have commented on the decision, with Koch urging the Reserve Bank governor to call out Australian governments for their spending and Wilson stating that the Reserve Bank's hand was forced by domestic problems rather than international factors.
